Introduction

The D. Van Nostrand Company Collection of Edward M. Crane consists of correspondence, financial papers, documents, diaries, photographs, artwork, printed matter, and other papers of the American publishing consultant and former president of D. Van Nostrand Company Edward Matthews Crane (1922- ).

Range of Collection Dates: 1834-1969

Size: 15.1 linear feet (21 archival boxes, 2 record center cartons, 2 oversize flat boxes)

Photocopying, literary rights, and citation: Single photocopies may be made for research purposes. No further photoduplication of copies of material in the collection can be made when Princeton University Library does not own the original. Permission to publish material from the collection must be requested from the Associate University Librarian for Rare Books and Special Collections. The library has no information on the status of literary rights in the collection and researchers are responsible for determining any questions of copyright. Citations should be as follows: D. Biographical Sketch

Edward M. Crane, Jr. (Princeton University Class of 1945), was president of the D. Van Nostrand Company, publishers of trade, technical, and scientific books. Originally based in New York City, the company relocated to Princeton, New Jersey, in 1955. Crane was the fourth member of his family to head the company since 1888.

Collection Description

Scope Note

Consists of records compiled by Edward M. Crane, Jr., relating to the D. Van Nostrand Company. Included are letters by family and friends to David Van Nostrand (1811-1866), the founder of the company (1848); correspondence and documents of the Crane family, mainly concerning investments in the Van Nostrand Company; letters of congratulations for Edward M. Crane, Jr., on becoming president of the company in 1964; financial statements and ledgers; budget records; profit and loss statements; departmental breakdowns; director's and general meeting minutes; stock and bond certificates; personal and business photographs; catalogs of Edward M. Crane's rare book collection; D. Van Nostrand book catalogs; miscellaneous printed matter; a large framed architect's drawing (1955) for the D. Van Nostrand Company office building in Princeton, N.J.; publication budget files (1957-1962); business transactions with Elsevier Publishing Company; financial statements; Committee to Defend America files (1940s); information about Edward M. Crane's book collection; information about the Princeton University Library fund in memory of Edward M. Crane; speeches by Edward M. Crane, Jr.; and miscellaneous materials.

Arrangement

The collection is currently unprocessed, but materials have been roughly sorted into boxes by form and genre.
