Princeton’s Dunhuang Documents Digitized

Princeton’s Dunhuang materials are now included in the International Dunhuang Project, including students’ examination papers from the 8th century. Dunhuang, in western China on the legendary Silk Road, is famous for its cave library, sealed and hidden at the end of the first millennium CE and re-discovered in 1900. The library’s contents were dispersed over many continents since then but now have been reunited in a virtual archive. Manuscripts held in the Princeton East Asian Library and the Princeton University Art Museum were digitized by IDP London in October 2007.

ReCAP Opens Fifth Storage Module

The fifth module of The Research Collections and Preservation Consortium (ReCAP) recently opened on Forrestal Campus for the receipt of accessions. Module five is significantly larger than any of the modules built previously with a storage capacity approximately equal to that of two earlier modules. Module five provides Princeton with additional shelving space for approximately 1,650,000 book volume equivalents, which addresses our book storage needs for more than ten years at current rates of acquisition and collection growth. Eileen Henthorne is the Executive Director of ReCAP, which serves not only as Princeton’s remote storage facility but that of Columbia University and The New York Public Library.
